Glassfish is an excellent J2EE and Web Server container. With the addition of the ESB extensions, Glassfish has the potential to become a defacto standard for the Enterprise fair of Java based deployments.

The larger question is how will Oracle treat it? It competes against two of Oracle's "for sell" or revenue generating products (Oracle App Server and BEA which has primarily become BEA). This makes Oracle's attitude toward Glassfish questionable at best. Will Oracle allow Glassfish to live within the older Sun leadership and engineering core? Or will Oracle simply abandon it and leave it up to the open source world only to enhance and maintain? Now it competes head on with Apache, and the Apache group has their own priorities. IBM will not care for Glassfish (who contributes to the Apache group), since it competes with their revenue generating WebSphere market.

Personally, I hope Glassfish continues. I myself use it and really like this simple to use, administer, and deploy J2EE App Server. It is much easier to use and administer than the other open source alternative, JBoss, and has a consistent set up and administration paradigm on practically any OS (which is vital in heterogenous environments). So the question about Glassfish is the Oracle acquisition; at least in my mind.

Interesting and timely article. I do alot of PHP work and I was just starting to look at Groovy as a platform to move to. I'd thought about running PHP on JEE to start my move as well as take advantage of the power of JEE. I'm currently getting familiar with Glassfish and Geronimo. I do believe Glassfish could stand to be the next platform for web that brings together enterprise support and the ease of web development found in the modern web languages/frameworks.

You should take a look at this:

Glassfish isn't the only game in town for alternate languages and frameworks running in a Java runtime environment.
